Admission Requirements
Please refer to the following abbreviations when examining the
CIDH admission requirements:
(G) General Level
(A) Advanced Level
(C) College Preparation Level
(U) University Preparation Level
(M) University/College Preparation Level
- OSSD, GED
- Plus the following senior level (gr. 11 or higher) subject credits:
- Grade 12 English (C), (U), (A) or (G)
- Grade 11 Biology (C), (U), (A) or (G)
- Grade 11 or 12 Chemistry or Physics (C), (U), (A) or (G)
- Grade 11 Mathematics, (C), (U), (M), (G) or (A) while not required, is highly recommended
- Cooperative Courses in these disciplines are not considered as having met this academic requirement.
Candidates educated in Canada outside of Ontario must have completed a high school diploma equivalent to an OSSD or GED plus courses equivalent to:
- Grade 12 English (C) or (U)
- Grade 11 Biology (C) or (U)
- Grade 11 or 12 Chemistry or Physics (C) or (U)
- Grade 11 Math (C), (U) or (M), while not required, is highly recommended
- Cooperative Courses in these disciplines are not considered as having met this academic requirement.
Candidates who have graduated from high school and/or a post-secondary institution in a foreign country are required to have their secondary and post-secondary academic transcripts evaluated on a course-by-course basis by World Education Services to determine if their degree/diploma is equivalent to an OSSD and courses taken are equivalent to:
- Grade 12 English (C) or (U)
- Grade 11 Biology (C) or (U)
- Grade 11 or 12 Chemistry or Physics (C) or (U)
- Grade 11 Math (C), (U) or (M), while not required, is highly recommended
- Cooperative Courses in these disciplines are not considered as having met this academic requirement.
All applicable fees pertaining to this service are the responsibility of the applicant. Applicants must arrange to have copies of the evaluation forwarded to CIDH directly from World Education Services by the required deadlines. Evaluations by other organizations may be acceptable. Please contact CIDH for details.
If the required courses have not been taken, the applicant must successfully complete the required course(s) prior to applying for admission to CIDH.
The Dental Hygiene program at CIDH is taught in English. Successful completion of the program demands a strong grasp of the English language, both written and verbal. Special accommodation will not be provided for students whose first language is not English or who have been educated in a language other than English.
The National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination, which must be passed in order to practice as a dental hygienist in Canada, is offered only in English and French.
- Will be at least 19 years of age in the calendar year in which admission is sought.
- Mature applicants who lack the academic admission requirements may be considered on an individual basis.
- Persons applying as mature students must still write the mandatory Pre-admissions test.
Note: Spaces will not be held specifically for the placement of mature students.
Applicants are required to write the CIDH preadmission test. This test includes biology, chemistry, physics, English, math and logical reasoning. Calculators, dictionaries or other aids are not permitted when writing the test. There is a fee to write the test. Applicants are required to bring photo identification to the pre-admissions test for viewing by CIDH.
Candidates should contact CIDH for test dates.
Persons applying as mature students must still write the mandatory Pre-admissions test.
CIDH utilizes a comprehensive selection process and cannot guarantee admission to every qualified applicant.
Admissions decisions are based on the following:
- Academic Performance in Secondary School and/or University/Community College
- Results of the mandatory preadmission test
- Other documentation submitted by the candidate which they believe will strengthen their application<
- Other factors deemed relevant by the Dean and Admissions Committee
Selected candidates will be offered admission via written correspondence. These candidates will have a fixed amount of time to inform CIDH of their decision. Where the candidate accepts admission to CIDH, an administrative process will follow to complete the registration process.
A waiting list of potential students will also be created. Students placed on the waiting list will receive written correspondence indicating their status. Candidates on the waiting list will be offered admission as space becomes available. Once the available spaces have been allocated, candidates still on the waiting list will be notified that the selection process is completed and that they will not be admitted to the program.
Students not offered admission will receive written correspondence to this effect.
Note: CIDH reserves the right to change the admissions criteria and selection process at any time and without notice.
All applicants who are offered admission following the selection process will be offered a Conditional Acceptance pending the following:
Completion of a confidential health information form which includes:
- Proof of immunization status for Hepatitis B & physician's interpretation of results
- Results of mandatory TB testing & physician's interpretation of results
- A completed Medical Health Form
- A letter from a dentist confirming good current dental health
- A current clear criminal record check (CPIC)
- Proof of current First Aid Certification and current certification as a Basic Rescuer (Level C) in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). First Aid certification and CPR certification must be kept current at all times while a student is registered at CIDH.
Applicants who do not meet published deadlines for submission of all required documents may have their conditional acceptance withdrawn.
Applicants to CIDH are not required to submit these documents prior to being offered admission to the program.
